transfusion

(trans-FYOO-zhun)

This is when part or whole blood is put into a person's bloodstream. The blood may be donated from another person or it may have been taken earlier from the person who is receiving the transfusion and stored until needed.

Transfusions are sometimes needed when having surgery for breast cancer.
