pleural effusion

(PLOOR-ul eff-YOO-zhun)

This is when there is too much fluid between the thin layers of tissue that line the outside of the lungs and the inside wall of the chest cavity.

Pleural effusion can be a side effect of Herceptin (chemical name: trastuzumab), a targeted therapy.

Sometimes, pleural effusion can be sign of metastatic cancer.
