lumbar puncture [also called spinal tap]

(LUM-bar PUNK-chir)

This is a procedure that puts a needle in between the bones of the lower back, directly into the fluid sac around the spinal cord. It may be done to take fluid and check it for abnormalities. It can also be done to give anticancer drugs.
