epidermoid carcinoma [also called squamous cell carcinoma]

(ep-ih-DER-moyd kar-sih-NO-ma)

Cancer that begins in squamous cells. These are thin, flat cells that look like fish scales. They form the surface of the skin. They also line the surfaces of the air and food tubes and of some organs. This type of cancer rarely occurs in the breast. It is a common type of lung and skin cancer.
