ErbB1 [also called epidermal growth factor receptor]

The receptor protein found on the surface of some cells and to which the epidermal growth factor binds, causing the cells to divide. Epidermal growth factor receptor is found at abnormally high levels on the surface of many types of cancer cells, and may be why these cells divide excessively if epidermal growth factor is also present. Also known as EGFR or HER1.
