D&C [also called dilation and curettage]

(DEE and SEE)

A procedure that removes the inside lining of the uterus. First the cervix is opened (or dilated) so that a small spoon-shaped instrument (called a curette) can be put into the uterus. Then the curette is used to take out the uterine lining.
