calcitriol
(kal-sih-TREE-ol)
This is the active form of vitamin D. It is formed in the kidneys. It can also be made in the lab. It is used as a drug to increase calcium levels in the body. This is important to do when kidney or thyroid problems take calcium from the bone or other tissues. Calcitriol is not a vitamin.
